Hrithik Roshan reflects on his complex relationship with father Rakesh Roshan while discussing the pressures of their filmmaking journey in the Netflix documentary The Roshans.

The latest Netflix documentary The Roshans offers an intimate look at the lives and careers of music composer Roshan Lal Nagrath, known simply as Roshan, and his family.

The film explores the lesser-known aspects of their professional journeys while also delving into their personal lives and the intricate relationships they share.

One of the most poignant moments comes from actor Hrithik Roshan, who discusses his dynamic with his father, producer and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan.

In the documentary, Hrithik expresses that while Rakesh is a deeply loving person, he struggles with fully articulating his emotions.

“My father is, was, and always will be someone who loves deeply,” Hrithik shares.

“But his expression of love is the kind that was taught to him when he was growing up. I don’t think he was granted the kind of compassion from the world, and the kind of love.

So, the only way he learned was to be hard on himself. And that is how he expresses his love now. It’s often misunderstood.”

This candid reflection reveals the complexity of their father-son relationship, shaped by generational differences and individual experiences.

Hrithik’s mother, Pinkie Roshan on actor’s difference with Rakesh Roshan

Hrithik’s mother, Pinkie Roshan, also provides insight into the filming of Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, their first film together.

She recalls frequently checking in on Hrithik during the shoot, noting the fluctuations in his mood.

“Every second day, I would go and ask Duggu (Hrithik), ‘How’s your day? How’s the shooting going?’ Sometimes he would be very happy; but there were days when I found him a little sad. When asked what happened, he would come out of it eventually and tell me he wanted to do the scenes a different way.

And Papa said, ‘No, this is fine.’ I used to hear him and feel bad as the mother.”

Rakesh, who directed Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, acknowledges the challenges of navigating their dual roles as father and director.

“Hrithik and I used to argue,” he admits.

“He’d say, ‘Dad, I’ll do it this way.’ I would say, ‘No, Duggu, this won’t look good. Do it this way.’

It was a delicate balance because he’s an actor as well as my son.

We had our disagreements, but the results were often positive.”

Hrithik Roshan on the stakes involved in the shooting of Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

In a particularly revealing moment, Hrithik shares a memory that underscores the pressure and stakes involved in their filmmaking endeavors.

“I always saw the glass half full. So I complained a lot. I remember I had not color-corrected Raj in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. I was upset that my father let that go because it seemed so important. That was the first time he pushed back and said, ‘I am doing everything for him, and he’s sitting here and complaining.’ That night, I found out that the house and cars were mortgaged, and how much was at stake,” Hrithik recalls.

This documentary not only highlights the Roshans’ artistic legacy but also showcases the emotional depth of their familial relationships, offering viewers a heartfelt glimpse into the world of one of Bollywood’s most renowned families.
