Acciording to several reports, Saif Ali Khan’s attacker Shariful Islam Shehzad is a national-level wrestler from Bangladesh, who entered the country illegally seven months ago.

The Mumbai police have arrested the attacker who stabbed actor Saif Ali Khan six times while attempting a robbery at his house on January 16, 2025.

The police nabbed him after three days and was found sleeping in the middle of bushes in a Thane labour camp.

According to the latest reports, the attacker, identified as Mohammed Shariful Islam Shehzad, was a national-level wrestling champion back when he resided in Bangladesh.

Additionally, he reportedly entered India illegally from Bangladesh and had been living in Mumbai for the past seven months.

For the unversed, Shehzad broke into Saif and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Bandra home at around 2.30 AM on January 16 and got into a fight with their house help.

After the Race actor intervened, Shehzad attacked him with a knife, stabbing him multiple times and fled the scene.

The accused reportedly broke into the house with the intention to rob.

Saif Ali Khan attacker is a Bangladeshi

The police mentioned that Shehzad is a Bangladeshi national who has been illegally staying in India for the past few months.

Shehzad reportedly arrived in Mumbai in September 2024.

Initially, he worked at a hotel through a housekeeping company.

As part of the investigation, the contract of the company was also raided.

The Mumbai police also revealed that as per the primary evidence the attacker does not have any valid Indian identity proof.

The police further said that the accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, had also changed his name to Vijay Das after he entered India to conceal his Bangladeshi origins.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam said, “We arrested the accused from Thane last night.

He has been identified as Mohammad Islam and is of Bangladeshi origin.

We have applied sections of the Passport Act against him after he could not produce any proof to show he was Indian, and we found some proof to show he is Bangladeshi.”

Shehzad has been sent to five-day police custody by a Bandra court.

Meanwhile, his lawyer defended him saying that the Mumbai Police had no proof of the accused being a Bangladeshi national.

The lawyer said, “They said that he came here 6 months ago, but it is a wrong statement.

He has been living here for more than 7 years.

His family is in Mumbai too.”

According to reports, after committing the crime, he changed his clothes about three to four times to avoid being spotted.

He then moved across multiple locations, and travelled from Bandra to Dadar, Worli and Andheri, before heading to Thane.

Shehzad was a wrestler

After being arrested on Sunday, Shehzad reportedly told the cops that he was a district-level and national-level wrestler in Bangladesh.

During the interrogation, he revealed that he would compete in the lower weight category at district-level and national-level wrestling championships in Bangladesh.

He also claimed that his wrestling background allowed him to attack Saif Ali Khan without sustaining any injuries himself.

History of crimes

After his arrest, during the interrogation, it was revealed that Shehzad was involved in another robbery earlier when he worked in the Worli area.

He was accused of stealing a diamond ring, after which he was fired from his job.

The contract ended in December 2024.
