‘Race’ star Sameera Reddy was almost coerced to get a boob job when she was new to the industry

Sameera Reddy has been a loud and important voice for body positivity and authenticity. What shaped her opinions and what did she go through when she was new to the film industry?

The name Sameera Reddy might back some very fond memories of superhit songs and cool films for a lot of people. A different audience set may associate Sameera Reddy with empowering posts on her social media handles. But, one thing is clear. Out of sight, out of mind is definitely not how Reddy’s journey has panned out ever since she quit films.

Life after films

It was almost exactly a decade ago when Sameera married businessman, Akshai Varde. The two seem to be enjoying a blissful marriage and are blessed with a daughter, Nyra. After bidding adieu to films with Kannada film,Varadhanayaka in 2013, Reddy took to social media like duck to water. She has since built a dedicated and organic following on social media platforms and often talks about several pertinent issues. One of the things she speaks about most often is body positivity and acceptance.

Sameera Reddy opens up

In a recent interaction, Sameera Reddy opened up about the pressures she was confronted with when she was new in the film industry. She had no choice but to conform to industry standards vis-a-vis beauty, and recalls a time when she was almost forced to undergo plastic surgery.

Candid as always, referring to the relentless pressure she faced during the peak of her career to get a boob job, Reddy said, “So many people kept saying, ‘Sameera, everyone’s doing it, why aren’t you?’ But I didn’t want something like that inside me.”

The pressure to conform

When the pressure is immense like that, it takes a lot for someone to stand their ground, especially if that someone is still new to the industry. But, Sameera Reddy had the gumption to make that choice and what she did was embrace her natural self. Put simply, that was the only right thing to do in such a scenario.

It is also important to note that people who choose to opt for plastic surgery of any kind have the right to do so. It could be a temporary filler or a permanent augmentation, it goes without saying that one has the right to do exactly what they choose. The crucial aspect here is choice. Agency. So long as one is not coerced into this decision, there is no problem.

Sameera’s crusade

It is one thing for Sameera Reddy to have what it takes to not be coerced into making a decision such as this. But, it is something completely different when it comes to her taking up the cause and educating others. That sure deserves a whole lot of appreciation. Especially because Sameera has been a beacon of hope when it comes to body positivity.

In her unfiltered Instagram posts, she often doesn’t conceal her cellulite, is happy to discuss her weight gain, and proudly flaunts her grey hair. This sends out a very powerful message and she knows it. In the interaction, Reddy said, “People now compliment me for looking comfortable in my skin. When you show your grey hair, your belly fat, and your stretch marks, someone out there feels ‘there is somebody else like me’ and it takes away the pressure on them.”

We couldn’t agree more with her and wish that she continues to lead a fulfilling personal life. If we could add another row to our wishlist, it would be one very simple thing. How about a return to the silver screen? Wouldn’t we all love to see Sameera Reddy back in action in a cool film or a show?

She was told that everyone was getting it done, so she should too

Sameera said she believes in fixing herself ‘internally’

Sameera Reddy, who quit acting in 2013 and is now popular for her Instagram posts, recently spoke about being pressured by the film industry to undergo cosmetic surgery at the peak of her acting career. In a recent interview, she shared that she was once asked to undergo a breast enhancement procedure.

“I can’t emphasise enough the amount of pressure that was put on me to get a boob job at the top of my career. So many people kept saying, ‘Sameera, sab log kar rahe hain, aap kyun nahin’ (Sameera, everyone is doing it, why not you?)’ But I didn’t want something like that inside me,” Sameera told Hindustan Times.

Sameera said that though she doesn’t judge people who opt for plastic surgery or Botox, she prefers to fix herself “internally”.

The actor, who has appeared in films like ‘Musafir’, and ‘De Dana Dan’, has no qualms about accepting her age. She said she even got her age corrected on Google after she saw it showed her to be two years younger than her current age.

“People said I look happier and more comfortable in my skin now. I looked chiselled at 28, but there is warmth and comfort at 45. When I was 40, the internet had my age as 38. But I immediately got it changed as I was proud of being 40. Interviews mein itna fenk fenk ke (by lying so much in interviews), Google picked up the wrong age,” she said.

The actor-turned-influencer also didn’t give in to the requests to use filters while sharing photos and videos on social media. She wanted to be her real self on social media, something which she couldn’t do while being an actor.

Sameera shared, “I said I’ll show my skin when it is bad, I’ll show my cellulite and my weight. This is who I am. I am more grateful for doing this rather than being that perfect 36-24-36 figure. I get to be real which I never got to do when I was an actor.”

She argued that by being her real self, she gives other women confidence that there are many like them.

“There was always this parda (curtain) between me and my audience. We only put out what people wanted to hear, but it gives people anxiety when you show you ‘wake up looking like this’. No, you don’t. I wake up every day looking like crap, running behind my children. But I can look amazing as a 45-year-old, and I own it. When you show your grey hair, your belly fat, and your stretch marks, someone out there feels ‘there is somebody else like me’ and it takes away the pressure on them,” Sameera continued.

Sameera Reddy often talks about body positivity on social media. She made her Bollywood debut with ‘Maine Dil Tujhko Diya’ alongside Sanjay Dutt and Sohail Khan in 2002. She was last seen in the Kannada film, Varadhanayaka (2013).
